In English, the idiom “old dog” refers to an old person or a person who has lots of experience, but in Chinese “lao gou” is used to insult people. The same image conveys different meanings in English and Chinese. For another example, “If the old dog barks, he gives counsel”(Example 3) is “bu ting lao ren yan, chi kui zai yan qian” in the Chinese translation. Still another example is “An old dog like him never barks in vain. Whenever he barks, he always has some wise counsel worth listening to”(Example 4), while its chinese translation is “xiang ta zhe yang de hang jia li shou, bu ming zhe yi, yi ming jing ren”. In all the above examples, the origianl image “old dog” is substituted by the different images in the Chinese translations to show respect to the cultural background of the target reader.
