Make Note Cards
Nobody has a good enough memory to remember everything read.
There might be weeks, or even months, between the time of reading
and the time of writing (i.e. when you need to use the information
you collect through reading). It is advisable to record information
while reading.
You might record information on cards, in a notebook, or
on separate pieces of paper. But it is more convenient to
take notes on cards simply because the ease in keeping and
rearranging the cards. You cannot change the order of the
pages in your notebook without tearing them off, and separate
pieces of paper get lost easily. Therefore, you should have
cards ready for use. A variety of cards are available at stationery
stores. The most commonly used size is three by five inches.
When you take notes, do not pack a card with too much information.
Place only one note on a card. One note means one fact or
one idea. It would be clear when you refer to them in the
course of write-up. Nothing would be buried among your accumulated
notes. Besides, you have to be selective in note taking. Do
not waste your time taking down well-recognized facts or ideas.
It is not necessary, for example, to note that translation
require adequate proficiency in the languages involved.
